Long considered the father of the modern ghost story, Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936) was a highly regarded scholar whose knowledge of folklore, mediaeval history, and ancient manuscripts imbued his stories with a sense of realism and genuine menace that has kept them in print, widely read and widely discussed by students and fans of supernatural fiction, to this day.

Laying the foundations of folk horror, James wove a skillful blend of authentic sounding antiquarian detail and erudition with a steadily mounting sense of unease and jolts of sheer terror, while raising a nightmare menagerie of ghosts and demons and malign entities to haunt his protagonists and his readers.
