"His is the House of Pain. His is the Hand that makes. His is the Hand that wounds. His is the Hand that heals."

Shipwrecked, Edward Prendick is cast onto a remote island ruled by the mysterious and sinister Dr. Moreau who conducts horrific experiments, transforming animals into the grotesque hybrid-humans called the “Beast Folk.” The Beast Folk live under the five code of laws of Dr. Moreau:  “Not to go on all-fours, Not to suck up Drink, Not to eat Fish or Flesh, Not to claw the Bark of Trees, and Not to Chase other Men.” The five laws force the Beast Folk to suppress their animal instincts and behave as humans, but when the creatures start reverting to their primal, savage natures, their artificial humanity breaks down resulting in the deaths of Dr. Moreau and Montgomery, and the animal hybrid themselves. Only Prendick escapes with his life on a small boat and is eventually rescued. The Island of Dr. Moreau (1896) by H.G. Wells is regarded as a classic of science fiction and horror, and is considered one his best works.

H.G. Wells' The Island of Dr. Moreau is widely reviewed as a foundational, chilling work of science fiction that explores themes of vivisection, ethics, and the thin line between human and animal. Critics often describe The Island of Dr. Moreau as a superb tale of horror that delves into moral degradation, with some comparing it to The Tempest and others finding it a deeply unsettling, slow-burn narrative.
